China has greatly improved the quality of life of its people over the past two decades, lifting 200 million people out of poverty. The economic reform programme since 1978 has been the main vehicle for this progress.

Yet despite these achievements, major challenges remain:

  • Over 131 million people live on less than $1 per day
  • Poverty remains a major challenge for the Chinese government
  • China is the most populated country in the world, with over 1.3 billion people, so providing health services for all remains a difficult task

Health Poverty Action is working to improve health by concentrating on the spread of malaria along China’s border region with Burma.

Malaria levels are high along the Burma/China border and this project works on both sides of the border, increasing local communities’ access to better quality malaria services including prevention and treatment.

An astonishing 10 million people living along the Burma/China border who travel across the border frequently are at risk of contracting malaria. Health Unlimited’s project here will directly benefit these people – a mix of rural communities and migrant workers.
