Loeung is 40 years old and has eight children. He has lived in the Mondulkiri province of Cambodia all his life, and says "I am very happy in my village. If anyone ever tried to make us leave, we wouldn't go."

It's understandable that he expresses this fear. In recent years there have been many incidences of land grabbing by the government and companies coming from outside, as land in the resource rich province is a valuable commodity.

Loeung participates in our project to help indigenous people access their right to health in Mondulkiri. He is a member of a village health support group, which meets regularly with villagers to discuss their health concerns and represent these to the health authorities. He also receives training on topics such as how to prevent malaria and diarrhoea, which are key problems in the community and lead to high death rates, particularly among young children.

Although he sometimes finds it hard to encourage villagers to attend the meetings, particularly as it means spending time away from farming, he knows that the simple health messages can mean the difference between life and death. Drinking boiled water, sleeping under mosquito nets and going to a health centre when you are ill are just some of the pieces of advice he passes on to his community.

Loeung would like his health group to advocate to the authorities for a bigger supply of medicines at the nearest health centre, and also for a health post to be built nearer to his village, as the nearest one is 20km away. We will support his group on these issues and also help to set up a sustainable organisation to advocate for indigenous people's health rights in the long term in Mondulkiri.
